When I posted the New Music Update for November, I left out one of the finalists - Tony Lovell. Tony writes and performs short, often funny songs and his effort on November 24th got him into the final with the two other performers I mentioned.
Although my schedule is quite difficult, I have managed to see a fair amount of live music lately and this post is a run-down of some of the more interesting acts. Most of these performers are not local to the Boston area, although one is. Read on to find out which one and to hear my brief review of Calexico at the Somerville Theater last week.
So here’s what the mailer looks like when it arrives in your mailbox, assuming you’ve ever shopped at this store before. Obviously, I have and so I get all this stuff. I’m also a big fan of Fender, but I really dislike this aspect of their custom guitar series. This is a Fender Stratocaster. Sure, it’s got some special electronics, but I defy the average guitarist to discern the difference between this guitar and one costing, say, $1,000.
And that’s the thing about the blues jam. The musicians are just there to play and you don’t know what is going to happen. Sometimes, things get pretty groovy. Sometimes, they can’t figure out how to end a song (although that only happened a couple of times when I was there). But if you are perceptive, especially if you are a musician, you can find these little moments where someone shines.
