The tower itself is pretty run down, but still serviceable. The most striking feature is probably the enormous MWRA water holding tank next to the tower, but we’ll get to that. It turns out to be a really, really nice location for taking photographs.

There is one thing about heading into the Fells that is quite different from, say, a trip to the local playground. If you live in an urban area, you are not likely to encounter, say, a reptile, the way you might in the Fells.

You might think that since the top of this snowbank is dark, that it would absorb heat and speed the melting process. I think the reverse happens. Whereas sand spread lightly over a snowy sidewalk helps to melt it, sand and refused layered on top of a snowbank seems to insulate it.

The gorge is not that long but very pretty and very rugged, especially now with the winter conditions. There is a trail to the east side of the gorge and you can walk the length of it looking down. The drop from the top of the trail to the water is a good 50 feet, so even with a protective fence, I was being extra careful.

This one is mostly about the photos, folks. This is a picture of Wright’s Pond taken from the far end on the Spot Pond Reservoir side looking back over towards the beach area. We walked all around the pond today and although the trail was a little slippery in places, it wasn’t too muddy and there wasn’t a lot of trash on the ground.

First, the uncomfortable part. I had no idea this photograph was so full of tension until I got in into Lightroom. I just didn’t see it when I was taking the photo. I saw it when I cropped it to straighten the fence. It was then I realized how terribly wrong this picture is.

Now, I want to take this moment to tell you that I’m hereby coining the phrase Sun Fall to refer to this condition. There’s probably tens of thousands of other people who have already done it and quite a few of them are also likely named Dave, but in the off-chance that I’m the first, there you are.

One thing I discovered about Merlins watching this one – they can turn their neck around at least 180°.
