God Did Not Say That In The Bible

It’s time for another installment of Medford Baptists, this time in the form of an evolution-denying sign in front of, where else, the New England Baptist Church in Medford Square.

*ahem* For the record, God did not literally say this. Pastor Michael has created this quote by conflating the two passages of the bible quoted below. Obviously, Genesis 1 tells the story of creation that we are all familiar with. Psalm 14, however, says this:

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.

And then goes on to generally trash all the filthy, iniquitous, non-believing people left on earth.

But by putting quotes around the passage, Pastor Michael has created a little fiction here. The fools were referred to as fools because they didn’t believe in God, not because they didn’t believe in creationism. And even if they didn’t believe in creationism, that doesn’t automatically mean they did believe in evolution. Perhaps the logical flaw will be more clear if we try to express it as a classic syllogism:

God created the heaven, earth and all living creatures

This person does not believe in God

Therefore, this person is a fool that believes in evolution

Sorry Pastor Michael, that’s not working for me. However, I will say that I get the point and I don’t begrudge you or anyone else the right to believe in a strict interpretation of the bible complete with Christian creationism. But I wonder why you feel you have to invent quotes from God - isn’t there enough already in the bible to make your case?
