Mystic Lake Swans

23 November, 2008 (23:21) | Winchester | By: DaveO

I actually stopped by the Upper Mystic Lake in Winchester to get some photos of the ice building up, since it’s about that time of year again, but I got surprised by some swans…

And I had taken two pictures of the ice when I heard a commotion and looked up and saw this guy swimming around. Now, I had a 100mm macro lens on, which is the sharpest lens I own, but it has a limited field of view at this range. These swans are not afraid of people – it was clearly approaching me to see if I would feed it.

But I didn’t and eventually it found some grub, or more likely, aquatic weeds.

It must have been good, company for dinner!

Because these swans are used to people I could actually just walk down the shoreline until I was in front of them and take this head-on picture. It’s an old rule of thumb in photography – if you are shooting only in one orientation (like landscape), make sure you rotate the camera and try the other before you are done.
