You Can BE David Gilmour for $4,800

Yes, that’s right. You too can be just like David Gilmour for just under five grand. How? By purchasing this David Gilmour Signature Stratocaster Guitar from Guitar Center.

I find this whole thing to be really amusing. Isn’t the whole point of music to create your own sound and identity? But there must be people who pay this kind of dough because they keep coming out with these instruments – this isn’t even the worst offender.

So here’s what the mailer looks like when it arrives in your mailbox, assuming you’ve ever shopped at this store before. Obviously, I have and so I get all this stuff. I’m also a big fan of Fender, but I really dislike this aspect of their custom guitar series. This is a Fender Stratocaster. Sure, it’s got some special electronics, but I defy the average guitarist to discern the difference between this guitar and one costing, say, $1,000. And as for the electronics, really, amplifiers and sound processors are so good these days you can make any guitar sound like any other guitar without too much trouble.

But this is not the most expensive tribute guitar Fender makes.

So what’s the worst offender? Well, there’s the Andy Summers (The Police) Tribute Telecaster for $10,500, the Yngwie Malmsteen Tribute Stratocaster for $12,500, but the top of the heap right now is the Stevie Ray VaughnLenny‘ guitar for $17,000.

And here’s the fine print in case you just can’t live without it.
